Product Security Testing

Product Security Testing evaluates the security of an application or other piece of software.

It attempts to break or circumvent the product’s security mechanisms and identify scenarios where the application fails, behaves abnormally, or is otherwise vulnerable. Based upon the application type, AppLabs attempts various exploits and attacks on the product and the network protocols it uses. Tests like tampering with the licensing mechanism, gaining unauthorized access to application data, editing registry entries or configuration files (specific to the OS) are also attempted.

According to industry analysts such as Gartner, amongst others, integrating security best practices into the software development lifecycle actually reduces overall costs by increasing efficiency and also boosts customer satisfaction. An analysis conducted on applications indicates that these flaws arise due to lack of or limited security testing in an environment replicating the end user’s environment.

The product security testing service of AppLabs, involves tests targeted to break the security built into the product. AppLabs subjects the given application(s) to various attack scenarios, which include buffer overflows, memory leaks, reverse engineering, license evasion and registry tampering. Security tests are conducted in a state-of-the-art security test lab, equipped with the requisite tools and malware and a comprehensive testing approach is adopted with a clearly defined methodology.

Getting a security test done for a product improves software quality and aids customers by reducing development and maintenance costs as the product is shipped with minimal security issues.
