Network Security Assessment

The IT infrastructure of an organization consists basically of the following assets:

• Servers, e.g. web, mail, DNS, database
• Network components, e.g. routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers

 Although an organization’s IT department may deploy multiple layers of security solutions, it is not uncommon for security patches or service packs to be missed due to work pressures, maintenance windows, and change control processes. However, hackers do not have the same constraints and are constantly discovering new security vulnerabilities and looking for hosts with known vulnerabilities. Inadvertent and newly discovered security vulnerabilities can be exploited if discovered by attackers.

The common checks performed include: presence of unnecessary services, environment-related vulnerabilities, errors in configuration, missing hot fixes and patches, as well as compliance to specific security standards.
