Mobile/Handheld Applications Testing

An opportunity comparable to yesteryears’/ today’s desktop applications testing is in the making

Technology continues to transform the personal lives of individuals, and the past decade has brought radical changes in how many people interact with communities, friends, family and colleagues. In fact it is predicted that by 2015, companies will generate 50% of Web sales via their social presence and mobile applications.

Morgan Stanley predicts that the shipment of Smartphone will beat the PC Shipments within the next two years. Yes, this does imply very rapid evolution of internet access but more than anything else, for testing service providers, it means that iPad / Smartphone/handheld based business applications will create a testing opportunity comparable to today’s desktop application testing.

In 2010, the focus on use of personally owned equipment for work was further accentuated by the high-profile success of the Apple iPad. The apparent conflict between autonomy and control for users is now reaching a climax, and can no longer be contained or resisted. Gartner says that by 2014, 90% of organizations will support corporate applications on personal devices and by 2013, 80% of businesses will support a workforce using tablets.

With always-on access and super-fast ‘boot time’, near zero latency access to nearly all information and day-long-plus battery life in elegant portable devices, at affordable prices – little wonder industry pundits think that Gartner on this count made an understatement when it said ‘by year-end 2012, over 75% of enterprise mobile users will have some form of a Smartphone’.
