Mobility: Testing Landscape is Now More Intricate Than Ever

Participants in the ecosystem continue to wrestle with unique APIs, porting efforts, and testing on each device or mobile operating system.

Mobile device manufacturers, system integrators, mobile application development and testing vendors, middleware providers, and mobile service operators, all participate in the enterprise mobility ecosystem.

Mobile device (including applications) management has become a must-have solution for any organization that wants to efficiently and cost-effectively manage and secure its handheld devices. Many enterprise executives prefer to limit the number of mobile operating systems supported, but the reality is that employees and unit managers pressure most companies to support a host of mobile operating systems.

The most commonly used mobile operating systems are BlackBerry, Symbian OS, iPhone's Mac OS X and Windows Mobile, although expectations are high for Android to have a significant impact on large enterprise mobile application activities in the next couple of years. To develop mobile applications for multiple devices, participants in the ecosystem continue to wrestle with unique APIs, porting efforts, and testing on each device or mobile operating system.

Most firms do not embrace mobility for its own sake. Firms are embracing mobility to meet business challenges.  With wireless networks like mobile WIMAX, Fixed WIMAX, Satellite or VSAT, Public Wi-Fi networks, public cellular data, in-house WLAN, etc.,  proliferating and devices raining (enterprises are supporting even personal devices ) the application development and testing landscape is becoming more intricate than ever.
